Population Pyramid

  • Recent Updates: April 26, 2022
  • 1. Overview

The population pyramid (also known as the age structure chart) shows the distribution of various age groups in the population. One common distribution commonly used for this visualization type is the female and male populations by age. As shown below:

In this chapter, we introduce how to create this kind of population pyramid.

    2. Create a population pyramid

    2.1 Import data

After obtaining the census data from the National Bureau of Statistics, you can use the Excel dataset to import it into the business package under data preparation, as shown in the following figure:

    1.png

This data table counts the population by age group and sex. It is inconvenient to use in data analysis. We need to do preliminary processing of the data and count the data into three fields: age, sex and population.

    2.2 Data processing

Create a self-service dataset, add the population and sex of 0-4 years old, as shown below:

    2.png

Select "New column" in the operation column on the left , as shown in the figure below:

    3.png

Add a new column of "Age", and the input field is "0-4 years old", as shown below:

    4.png

Click "OK". Rename the self-service dataset to "0-4 years old" and save the table, and change the field name of the population to "Population", as shown in the following figure:

Follow the same operation as above to process data of other age groups, and the processed business package is as follows:

    7.png

Create a new census self-service dataset, and merge the tables created above into one table, as shown in the following figure:

    8.png

Click "Save" to save the self-service dataset.

    2.3 Create a chart

Create a new dashboard and add component, select the newly added census self-service dataset table above, and copy the field "Population" in the indicator area to be analyzed, as shown in the following figure:

    9.png

Add detail filtering conditions for "Population" and "Population1" fields respectively, the sex belongs to male and sex belongs to female, as shown in the following figure:

Drag "Age" into the horizontal axis, drag both the "Population" and "Population1" fields into the vertical axis, and select the Contrast Column Chart in the chart type, as shown in the figure below:

    12.png

    2.4 Effect view

At this time, the male and female populations listed by age are realized in the preview of the chart. We can also adjust the display color according to men and women by dragging the "Sex" field into the color bar under Graphic Properties, as shown in the following figure:

    13.png

The displayed color can be adjusted as needed. The age display in the vertical axis can also be adjusted to display in order according to your own needs. The effect is as follows:
