The general area chart is a type of chart used to display the changes of data over time or other ordered categorical variables, while the stacked area chart can also show the relationship between parts and the whole of the data.
Stacked area charts can visually display the cumulative and relative sizes of various indicators by stacking the values of each category in a certain order to form a whole area.
For example, you can use a stacked area chart to show how Order Quantity and Inventory of different categories of products contribute to Total Amount, as shown in the following figure.
Use Custom Chart, select Area in the drop-down list under Graphic Property, and select Enable Stacking for the vertical axis indicator field.
1. Advantage
Stacked effect: The values of each data series are stacked on the Y axis to create an accumulation effect, and the entire area of chart is composed of the stacked data series.
Displaying accumulation and proportion: Stacked area charts can not only display the cumulative total of each category, but also display the proportion that each part occupies in the total amount.
2. Disadvantage
Increased complexity: When numerous variables are stacked, the chart may become too complex to read and understand.
Difficult to analyze individual data series: Stacked area charts are not suitable for analyzing the changes of each data series over time individually, because each series is based on the cumulative value of the previous series.
