  • I. Overview

    1) The Drill Map is a type of map that allows you to drill down from a country to a province/state, and from a province/state to a city. A Drill Map commonly needs the built-in GIS background, which is created and edited in the following ways: GIS Background

    2) The details to set the style and special effect of the drill map, which is similar to that of the ordinary charts, is not regurgitated here. This article focuses on how to achieve the drilling effect.

    II. Area Map

    1. Insert an Area Map

    1) Click [Floating Element]>[Chart], and select [Drill Map]>[Area Map]

    2) Resize the map

    2. Prepare map data

    1) Prepare 2 datasets, one for storing Province Data and another for storing City Data.

    2) Ensure the province name is the same as that recorded in the built-in GIS Background. For example, there is a province named Anhui in the GIS Background, so the dataset should store data under the name of Anhui rather than Anhui Province.

    3) Ensure the city name is the same as that recorded in the built-in GIS Background. For example, there is a city named Hefei City under Anhui in the GIS Background, so the dataset should store data under the name of Hefei City rather than Hefei.

    3. Set the base map

    1) First, set Map Boundary and Style. Select [China(Province)] in [Map Boundary]. The [GIS Layer] is set as [Mapbox] by default, but you can also select other styles for GIS layer.

    2) Next, set Zoom Level and Center. It is recommended to select [Auto] for both of Zoom Level and Center, so that the map will be displayed in the center at the beginning.

    4. Set data

    1) First of all, set Drill Level. Select the [Drill Level] under [Data]. Then, the levels within the Map Boundary [China (Province)] will appear on the right-hand pane. Click on the Triangle Mark before [China (Province)] to hide the levels.

After all levels are hidden, so there are two levels shown here (because the selected map boundary [China(Province)] has two levels). These two levels are displayed as area map by default. The zoom level of the second level can be set as auto or fixed (6 is selected here) in the dropdown box.

    2) Click [Data] and select [Basic Data Summary] or [All levels are designated].

    3) Click [All levels are designated]. Set the province data in the first drill level, and the city data in the second drill level.

    5. Preview drilling effect

All provinces are displayed initially. Click on a province to drill down to the cities in that province, and cities without data are shown as gray.

    6. Modify data settings to achieve automatic drilling effect

    1) Click [Data], select [Basic Data Summary] in the dropdown, and only set the city data at the bottom. There is no need to set the province data, and the system will automatically add and calculate the province data based on the city data.

    2) Click Preview, and scroll the mouse over a province to zoom in the map. When the map is zoomed in to a certain extent, it will automatically drill down from province to city.

    III. Point Map

The Point Map is set up in the same way as the Area Map. The difference is that the Point Map shows the geographic location in the form of points. If the geographic location to be displayed has only latitude and longitude data without the corresponding built-in GIS Background, it is more advisable to use the Point Map, and when setting up, each drill layer needs to be set up separately.

    IV. Custom Map

The Custom Map allow each drill level to have different display categories, either drill from points to areas, or from areas to points, and can be set up in a similar way to general drill maps. This section applies the same data as the Area Map to implement drill from province to city.

    1. Insert an Area Map

    1) Click [Floating Element]>[Chart], and select [Drill Map]>[Custom Map]

    2) Resize the map

    2. Set the base map

Select [China(Province)] in [Map Boundary]. The [GIS Layer] is set as [Mapbox]. It is recommended to select [Auto] for both of Zoom Level and Center.
