    Application Scenario

Data drilling allows you to gradually narrow down your focus from a broad range of data to a specific point, uncover valuable insights, and master data information at different levels.

Data drilling can also meet the data needs of different roles regarding the same indicator and assist decision-makers in identifying the specific causes of problems through level-by-level drilling.

For example, the sales of different provinces are displayed on the map. By clicking a specific province, you can view the sales for all cities within the province. This process is data drilling.

    Implementation Method

    1. First, you need to create a drill directory for the dimension field that needs to be drilled (such as the Province and City fields) in the to-be-analyzed area of the component.

    2. Then you need to create a component with the drill directory.

Three types of drilling are available based on different drilling methods.

    Drilling MethodDescriptionImplementation Method
Map drillingAllows you to drill down into data on the map.

For example, you can drill down into data from Province to City.

You need to convert fields to geographic roles.

    1. You can convert the fields to geographic roles and then create a drill directory.

    2. You can use the latitude and longitude fields of the drill directory to create a map.

    3. You can drag the drill directory into Graphic Property.

Date drillingAllows you to drill down into the date dimension.

For example, you can drill down into data from Year to Month to Day.

You need to switch field dimensions to set the fields to date formats.

    1. You can copy the date field twice and use the three fields to create a drill directory.

    2. You can create a component with the drill directory.

    3. You can switch the dimensions of the drill directory and set different date formats (YearYear-Month, and Year-Month-Day).

Normal drillingRefers to all drilling methods except the above two types of drilling.

For example, you can drill down into data from Product Type to Product Name.

The Product Type and Product Name fields already exist in the data table.

    1. You can create a drill directory directly by dragging the dimension field over another field.

    2. You can create a component with the drill directory.

You can download the sample data Office Supply Data.xlsx.

    Map Drilling

Map drilling allows you to view the indicator values at different levels directly and observe the details of indicators in a specific region.

You can view the sample data and analyze the sales of different provinces and cities. For example, the sales figures are displayed in different regions with varying shades of color. Click a region to view the sales of a city in a province, as shown in the following figure.

For details about the procedure, see Map Drilling.

    Drill Directory Creation

    1. Create a component with the sample data Office Supply Data, click the drop-down icons of the Province and City fields, and select Geographic Role from the drop-down lists of the two fields separately, as shown in the following figure.

    2. A corresponding drill directory needs to be generated based on the drill-down hierarchy for map drilling. For example, drag the City field over the Province field to generate a drill directory of Province,City, as shown in the following figure.

    Map Creation

Use the longitude and latitude fields of Province,City and create an area map displaying the sales.

Select Area Map in Chart Type and drag the fields in the to-be-analyzed area into the analysis area, as shown in the following figure.

The key point is that the drilling can only be achieved when a drill directory of Province,City exists in Graphic Property. Otherwise, the map is only a common area map.

Drag a field into the Color bar in Graphic Property to generate the legend automatically. If you do not need to display the legend, you can choose Component Style > Legend and deselect Display All Legends.

At this point, you have completed learning the creation of map drilling.

    Date Drilling

FineBI allows you to drill down into time dimensions to analyze sales data at the Year-Month-Day level. You can view the sales details at different dimensions.

For example, you can drill down into the Signing Date of product orders by year, month, and day to identify the year with the highest sales and then further analyze the monthly and daily sales of that year, as shown in the following figure.

For details about the procedure, see Date Drilling.

    Drill Directory Creation

    1. Add a component with the sample data Office Supply Data, copy the Signing Date field twice, and name the two fields obtained Singing Date-Year-Month and Singing Date-Year-Month-Day, as shown in the following figure.

    2. Create a drill directory by arranging the three fields in sequence, as shown in the following figure.

    Component Creation

    1. Create a group table for sales and profit with the obtained drill directory Signing Date, as shown in the following figure.

    2. Set different date formats for different dimensions.

Click the icon to switch the drill directory. Set the Signing Date field to be in the format of Year, the Signing Date-Year-Month field to be in the format of Year-Month, and the Signing Date-Year-Month-Day field to be in the format of Year-Month-Day, as shown in the following figure.

At this point, you have completed the creation of a date drilling component.

    Normal Drilling

Products are divided into several types (such as Consumable, Furniture, and Device) as shown in the table in section "Implementation Method." You can use Category and Product Name to create a drill directory, as shown in the following figure.

For details about the procedure, see Normal Drilling.

    1. Click the drop-down icon of the Category field and select Create Drill Directory. Click the drop-down icon of the Product Name field and choose Add to Drill Directory > Category.

    2. Select Partitioned Column Chart in Chart Type and drag the drill directory and the Sales field into the horizontal and vertical axes, respectively, as shown in the following figure.

At this point, you have completed the learning of normal drilling.

    Dimension Switching

In addition to level-by-level drilling through clicking, you can also click the icon to view the drill directory and switch between different dimensions, as shown in the following figure.
